IN SHORT — THE PUBLIC RECORD
  • United Services Automobile Association (NAIC #25941) writes homeowners in Florida and South Carolina, but only for members — active/former military and their eligible family.
  • USAA is a member-owned reciprocal exchange based in San Antonio, Texas; some policies are written through affiliates such as USAA Casualty Insurance Company and Garrison Property & Casualty.
  • Report auto, homeowners, and renters claims through the same line, 1-800-531-8722, or the online Claims Center; confirm on their site.
  • Membership does not change your rights on a claim — request the file and the policy basis in writing like any other carrier.
  • Disputes track the national pattern: roof wear-and-tear denials, wind-driven-rain causation, and actual-cash-value holdbacks.

FAQ

USAA — common questions

Who is eligible for USAA homeowners insurance?

USAA membership is required to buy a policy. Eligibility is limited to those serving or who served honorably in the U.S. military, and their eligible family members (spouses and children of USAA members). Coverage is written by United Services Automobile Association (NAIC #25941) and its affiliates. If you are not eligible, you cannot obtain or transfer a USAA homeowners policy.

How do I report or dispute a USAA claim?

Report a claim at 1-800-531-8722 or through the USAA Claims Center at usaa.com; confirm the current number on their site. To dispute a decision, request the full claim file and the specific policy basis in writing. Florida offers free Department of Financial Services mediation for residential property claims, and most policies include an appraisal clause for amount-of-loss disputes. In Florida you generally have 1 year from the date of loss to give notice (§ 627.70132); South Carolina applies a contractual suit-limitation period — confirm your dates with counsel.

Halversen Law is a property-insurance firm licensed in Florida and South Carolina. Its attorneys represent policyholders — not carriers — on denied and underpaid claims. Founding attorney Brent Halversen spent the first years of his career defending insurance companies and banks at Florida firms (Broad and Cassel, Fowler White Boggs Banker, Wicker Smith O’Hara & Ford); since 2008 the firm has used that inside knowledge to fight for policyholders, recovering over $40 million in insurance disputes.
